Wiring Mk1 wiring sucks. Unless you have a late Mk1, with the blade type fuses, the whole lot has to be replaced so the Mk2 16V engine loom can be used. I used a Mk2 Scirocco loom (Mk2 Sci is very similar to Mk1 Golf) and a Mk2 16V engine loom and fusebox. Don't bother with an aftermarket-integrates-into-your-existing wiring loom kit as they are shite. Replace the whole loom. Its not that hard! |

Brakes Mk1 brakes are ok. When they are set up well, and in good order, then they work adequately (I guess). The 16V engine fouls the original Mk1 master cylinder, so a smaller (but larger internal diameter) Mk2 16V one must be used (the late type). The Mk2 16V m/c and bigger servo is the single most fundemental step to improving Mk1 brakes. I have rear discs, from a late Mk2. The improvement with rear discs over drums is not great, but needed. Front brakes are standard Mk1. Future plans are to fit front calipers and 256mm discs from an Audi 80. |

Suspension Coilovers rule. But taking the front too low will result in premature wear in the driveshafts, bearings and diff. And the car doesn't handle so good. Lower strut brace is a must have for a Mk1. Nick made mine, and the rear one, and the upper front fitted to Daddy Rad's Sci GTI. Uerathane bushes rule too. And oversized roll bars. And a suspension setup so stiff the shell cracks.... |
